While you might immediately associate Chopard with jewelry , the brand is a true manufacture, making in-house movements in both Fleurier and Geneva to an extremely high standard. The L.U.C collection really shows off what Chopard’s watchmakers can do in terms of technical achievement, fine finishing, and design. When we say in-house we’re talking about everything, down to smelting the gold used for the case. Chopard watches are far from being an afterthought.

L.U.C 1963 Chronometer, which takes its inspiration from traditional chronometers. The movement, Caliber 63.01-L, is the foundation for everything else here. The 63.01-L was developed in 2010 in a collaboration between Chopard and the Geneva Watchmaking School and was envisioned as a slightly miniaturized pocket watch caliber. Maintaining the traditional architecture and finishing meant a slightly large end result at 38mm uncased. But with that size, you get COSC-certified chronometer performance and a 60-hour power reserve.

The finishing on the 63.01-L is beautiful. The movement is manually wound and really fills the case, giving you a lot to look at. There is wide Cotes de Gèneve, deep bevels on the bridge edges, and gold chatons around the jewels. The large balance wheel is controlled by a swan-neck regulator, further enhancing performance. Topping it all off, you’ll notice a Poinçon de Gèneve, meaning the entire watch adheres to the highest Genevan standards.
Even with the large size, the short curved lugs do hold the watch tightly to the wrist. It’s neither particularly thick or thin and you don’t get any of that top-heavy feeling that can sometimes plague watches like this. The brushed case sides also help downplay the visual size of a case like this, which could look massive if polished all over. If a larger size isn’t a problem for you when it comes to dress watches, this is an outstanding choice. This watch case with 43mm width is a comfortable movement.
