Aesthetically, this watch certainly isn’t boring. Like a proper dive watch, the unidirectional bezel insert includes the first 15-minutes in grey rather than black, while the mark really line up with the indices — something you’d be surprised does not occur as often as it should. The hobnail screw-down crown with realistically sized crown guards adds a nice touch that the original Samurai was missing. The indices are superbly finished, along with the sharp lines which pay homage to the original’s DNA place the small bow on the package. But the real stars of the series are the palms, which are upgraded to match the modern landscape. I said earlier that the boxy and straight design has been replaced with a cleaner, lustrous handset. Gone would be the seconds hand with (what I feel) is an awkward lumed box to get a pointer, and contained is a thin, elegant spear-tipped hand with a bigger luminescent indicator.Something this handset boasts which is not even in the newer iterations of the Samurai is a handset that is polished. As for me, I love them. Apart from water resistance, legibility is arguably the most crucial aspect of a dive watch, along with the thick, bold hands and indices make this one of the very used watches in my collection. Throughout the afternoon, the Clou de Paris feel of the dial really makes the palms and indices pop up. The wash polished palms against the matte square textures simply make it easier to tell the time in any given angle. With previous models having brushed palms, the polish on the SRPB51 looks a lot more defined.At night, or at the dark, the lume is lasting and bright. I said a cave earlier. The first place I took this view was on a hike over an Arizona mountain range, along with the path led through a set of caves and streams rather than once did the lume die out. In reality, the lume is so bright that you could vaguely make out the printed text onto the dial. Even the spear-tipped second hand is lumed heavily enough that you can make out the sweep from the dark without having to squint. Seiko is doing a lot of good things to promote its high-end Grand Seiko collection around the world. And in 2014, it got a boost when the Hi-Beat 36000 GMT Limited Edition watch won the “Petite Aiguille” prize at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
